The 34th Infantry started during the Civil War. They were the Infantry to respond to President Lincoln's call for volunteers. Coincidentally, the 34th infantry was the 1st to be deployed to Europe in World War II.

In June 1942, the 1st Army Rangers were organized. Joseph was a staff sergeant in command of an elite plantoon of Army Rangers, over 80% of the personnel selected for the first rangers were from the 34th division.

The 34th Division holds the record for the most days in combat: 500

Joseph Mauriello and the 34th Infantry fought in many major campaigns. In Africa, he was in campaigns in Algiers and Tunisia and in Europe, he fought in Italy in the Anzio Beach assualt, the Naples-Foggia, and Rome-Arno campaigns.

Joseph Mauriello received 4 Bronze Stars, which is the 3rd highest medal given by the military, for his bravery in Europe and North Africa.
